2024 HONG KONG DRAGON BOAT FESTIVAL IN NEW YORK
FLUSHING MEADOWS PARK | FREE ADMISSION | RAIN OR SHINE

David L. Archer
December 11, 1948 – November 10, 2023
PCNR November 14, 2023

How does one describe a true visionary, live event producer, marketing and public relations genius? Lover of jazz, radio, fine art, Heinekens and cooking? Home gardener of potatoes, peanuts, and roses? As well as being a generous friend, wonderful husband and father? You can list just one name – David L. Archer.

Born in Presque Isle Maine on December 11, 1948, to Leonard and Thelma Bishop Archer, David, even as a teenager, was an entrepreneur – having a radio show on station WEGP, where he spun the 45s of the ‘60s and began his love of radio, music and producing events. Leaving Maine for Boston to attend Emerson College, he majored in radio, where he met his event producing partner, Randy Harrison. In the 1970s and ‘80s David and Randy took Boston by storm, producing a mix of stage events and music at the Modern Theatre, an old movie and vaudeville theater that they renovated, and included performances by notable jazz artists Cecil Taylor and Herbie Mann, Sun Ra and The Arkestra, the annual Boston Mime Week, and David Mamet’s drama, American Buffalo.

After his stint in Boston, David moved to Woodstock, Vermont in 1989, where he met the “love of his life,” Diane Magnusson, who was attending Vermont Law School. They married in 1990, and enjoyed 35 years together, loving life, each other and their son, Matthew Behr. While in Vermont David was the managing director of Burlington’s Memorial Auditorium, turning a run-down 2600-seat venue into a dynamic performing arts center, featuring performances by George Carlin, Joan Baez, Jethro Tull, Gallagher, and Tito Puente (to name a few), as well as hosting WWE, Golden Gloves, Circuses, Sesame Street live, and Nickelodeon events.

After successfully putting Memorial Auditorium on the map, David and his family moved to the Hudson Valley of New York, where he spent the last 28 years helping organizations successfully create and amplify their brand and achieve their goals by providing strategic public relations, marketing and event management services to a wide range of hospitality, theaters, nonprofits, live festival/event producers, and small to midsize businesses. A sampling of David’s past and current clients include the Dance Theatre of Harlem, Ornette Coleman, The Hong Kong Dragon Boat Festival in New York, The Hudson House Distillery, The Queens World Film Festival, The Paramount Center for the Arts, Historic Hudson Valley, Bannerman Castle Trust, Thomas Cole House, The Peking Opera, and the Annual Robert Burns Birthday Celebration and Dinner.

After courageously battling cancer for six months, David passed away peacefully at home on November 10, 2023, in Hopewell Junction, NY, surrounded by his loving family. A celebration of David’s life memorial service is planned for the first weekend in December. David is survived by his wife Diane Magnusson, son, Matthew Behr, daughter-in-law, Sami Behr, granddaughter, Zinnia Behr, his brother-in-law, Steven Rosario, sister-in-law, Linda Magnusson-Rosario, and his brother’s and sister’s Nick Archer, Bruce Archer, Carla Masters, Lisa Archer, and their children and grandchildren.

HKDBF-NY, an international, multi-cultural celebration and sporting event, the largest multicultural Festival in New York and the largest festival of its kind in the U.S. With this year's Legacy race HKDBF-NY keeps up the age old tradition of Dragon Boat Racing in colorful, custom made teak boats, which are virtual works of art gliding on water. Custom made by a small coterie of craftsmen in Hong Kong, weighing one ton each, colorfully painted with a Dragon head at the front and Dragon tail at the rear, the boats are piloted by up to 20 crewmen, including 18 paddlers, a drummer and steers person.

For thirty successful years HKDBF-NY has attracted a diverse, multi-cultural audience of more than 20,000 attendees throughout North America. This year with 100+ teams participating involving more than 1,000 competitors from across the U.S. and Canada, this year's festival is expected to be notable for it's 2 day return, scale and fierce competition.

The tradition of Dragon Boat Racing is an annual Chinese rite commemorating the idealistic poet and performer Qu Yuan who drowned himself in the third century B.C. to protest against his emperor's policies. The locals raced in their boats in an attempt to rescue the poet. To prevent fish and water dragons from eating his body, the locals beat their drums and splashed their paddles. This was the beginning of Dragon Boat Racing. The Hong Kong Tourism Board is the official sponsor of the Awakening Eye Dotting Ceremony at Central Park on July 20th and for the Opening Ceremony of the Festival on Aug. 12th.

Admission to the HKDBF-NY is Free, Events take place Rain or Shine - Festival attendees Please take the MTA or shuttle bus with your MetroCard or use correct change.
